Bernie Garcia and Crazy Pictures Photographs
Though Bern might deny it, I beleive Bernie in some
way wanted approval from his father. Bernie Sr. was a
musician with some acclaim. Though they seemed to
fight alot, Bernie always seemed to be proud of his
dad's success in music. Bernie loved to listen to music
and was driven to write. Bernie was a prolific song
writer and kept many pads full of songs. He also was
self taught at the keyboard. Bernie didn't believe he
was that great a keyboardist, but really wanted to
showcase his music.
While playing together in his room, not an easy feet
considering Bernie lived in a trailer, Bernie asked John
"JW" Najarian if he wouldn't mind learning a tune or
two to play at a coffee house? JW was not so great at
the guitar, but loved to play. JW was in another band,
but was so bad at the guitar that the guys asked him to
put it down and front as the singer.
JW thought it would be cool to play so off they went.
They played to a crowd at some coffee house that had
Iguana in the name. What a nervous night. The
primarily artsy crowd clapped mainly for the guts Bern
and JW showed at getting on stage. Bern asked his best
friend, who also played guitar to join the band as the
bass player. JW at this point wanted to quit. It was hard
to say no to Bern who really wanted to continue trying.
As we played many open mike nights in the Covina
area, mainly at the Rude Dogs and The Boar's Head; a
slew of musicians would join us onstage to help us out.
Bryan Fulton was one of the many. Bryan, it was
agreed stuck around.
It did get better of course and Crazy Pictures went on to
play The House of Blues, Hollywood and Avery Fischer
Hall, New York, before disbanding. Bernie continued
writing up to his sudden death in 2005. Bernie left us
too early. This is a tribute to a band and a man who
was loved and will be missed.
